America's Hometown hides a championship course that needs to be checked off your list. Tucked off of Exit 7 in Plymouth you’ll find some great golf courses, but Waverly Oaks is one you can’t miss.
Value:
This Brian Silva masterpiece spans 240 acres of New England hills. Public rates range from $85-$140 in-season. Sure this isn’t the cheapest option around, but you're getting championship conditions without country club dues. For reference, peak rates at Pine Hills down the road is $165.
For this review, we played a mid-summer round on a Saturday morning and expected a 5+ hour round but the pace of play got us around in 4 hours and 20 minutes. The rangers were out checking in constantly… not in an annoying way, just enough to push things along to keep pace.
Condition:
Waverly ate me alive on the front 9. If you are off with driver, it’s going to be a long day as there’s minimal margin for error. From the back tees, you’ll touch 7100 yards and it plays the full amount. A few shorter par 4’s are followed up with monster 200+ yard par 3’s that require a perfect 4 iron shot… not my forte. Brian Silva is one of my favorite architects even if the courses don’t match my game, and Waverly is a textbook example of that.
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere was pretty easy going. Their 22,000 square foot clubhouse overlooks the 18th hole + the lounge next to the pro-shop is a good hang post-round. The majority of the clubhouse is a ballroom for weddings, but it would be incredible if they incorporated a heckle deck to get a better view of people finishing their rounds.
Similar to Pine Hills, you’re going to be coughing up some dough for a tee time, but it’s worth setting up a round at least once a season to put your game to the test at a great course.
