Overview:
The City of Champions, Brockton Massachusetts boasts a hidden gem of a private club in Thorny Lea Golf Club. Many have heard of the infamous Matt Parziale story - local firefighter who won the US Mid-Am to secure his spot in The Masters. Well, Thorny Lea is where Parziale and other local greats like Shannon Johnson call home. Knowing that walking in, there was no way this course was going to be a walk in the park.
Condition (8.8):
At first glance, Thorny looks fair and gettable. That quickly changes when you take a deeper look at the undulation of the greens. If you find yourself in the wrong spot, you better hope you can just keep a chip/putt on the green. One piece I enjoy about Thorny is every shot requires thought and precision of where you want to place yourself. Undoubtably, it is difficult, but if you navigate the course correctly and are able to play with a member who knows where to avoid, you'll enjoy the day.
Value (8.5):
It's always tough to put value on a round like this when you're just lucky enough to be a guest. However, $125 for a guest fee including cart was worth every penny. They host Mass Golf Member Days, Pro-Am's, and other events that give you a chance to check it out - get creative people!
