Overview:
A classic New England style layout that underwent immense transformation back in 2012 has now solidified itself as a top public course in the area, and provides a detailed experience from start to finish. Settled in the woods of Harvard, MA, Shaker Hills is a a 6800 yard, Par 72 course on 250 acres crafted by Fred Curtis and his team. A course & facility that is constantly pushing for innovation with their app, social media presence, and drive through halfway house is right up our alley on paper - here's our real take.
Value (7.7):
Another course that has implemented dynamic pricing to attract public play and brings everything included into one price. You could be paying $65 for a tee time here, but might only fit in 12-13 holes depending on day light. If you're looking for 9am on a Saturday? That'll run you closer to $160 including cart, range, & their new practice area. Definitely more of a treat than your every weekend round but Shaker has their operations down to a science. Also, it's worth mentioning that if you have their app, you will get your 5th round of the season free... not a bad incentive, I wish more courses opted for these deals. The course is good, but I have a hard time putting the value above 7.7 as the peak rate can break the bank.
Condition (8.5):
I was a huge fan of the layout. They throw in some fun shots like alternative tees on the par 3, third hole. Or, the infamous "roof shot" with a massive drop down to the green on 13. The conditions were solid especially for a May round, but the course definitely takes a beating with the immense play. Certainly don't be afraid to play up a set of tees from your usual round, the 6800 yards from the tips felt incredibly long. One of my favorite holes is the par 5, 18th. A dog leg left that even with a perfect drive, leaves a "hope and pray" second shot at a blind green. If you really muscle one out there, you have a chance at getting there in two shots, and you're met with an amphitheater style finish with the clubhouse.
Atmosphere (8.4):
If you're reading this blog, chances are you've seen the viral video circulating of the "drive through" half way house that has just about everything you could want for a drink, snack, lunch, etc. A super cool concept that will bring out all the weekend warriors just to snap a picture (like us). The deck overlooking the 18th is a sweet spot to finish the day and can totally see business/fundraiser outtings taking full advantage of the set up. Kudos to the Shaker team for innovating on an otherwise very traditional sport.
