Value : 7.7
Condition : 7.9
Atmosphere : 8.2
Overview:
Every course has their fans and foes, but this course has Divots followers taking two opposite sides of the spectrum whether it is any good or not, so we had to check it out.
Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland MA is a Par 72, 6400 yards - Donald Ross design that has been around since the 1920’s. It hosted some notable matches between the greats like Hagen & Ouimet. More importantly, it is the original site of the New England left handed championship… I’d be all over that back in the day… I wonder if that is still going on, would be incredible content.
Conditions:
Walking in, I had generally high expectations as I knew this course is popular and gets a lot of play. A lot of the haters harp on the long rounds and “not worth the money” but people will complain about anything nowadays. Though we had a dreary day, I was a big fan of the course itself. Large landing zones and difficult greens (thought they’d be faster). Some of the tee boxes were beat up pretty badly but that seemed to be a common trend in 2024 at public courses.
Opening up with back to back par 5’s and a gettable par 3 is never how I expected to start a round. However, it gives you a chance to start off on the right foot and rip driver.
Value:
$79-99 for 18 with a cart - fits the mold for a Donald Ross in greater Boston. Not sure where the complaints are coming from. It did take 4 and a ½ to get around, but that is unfortunately becoming standard for a Saturday round.
Morning tee times are tough to come by because they are reserved for their inner-club members who have been around for decades.
Atmosphere:
Very friendly staff and low key a great turn / post round hang - feels like your grandmother's living room, accompanied by a heavy pour in a transfusion and a Bianco sausage to fuel you up for the back 9.
