It’s not every day you get an invite to play one of the top ranked courses in all of New England. When I got the call on a summer Saturday morning, I looked at my fiance and said “I can’t pass this up”... and am so glad I didn’t.
Eastward Ho is the country club of all country clubs on the Cape - hosting uber wealthy Chatham families and business executives alike, I had total imposter syndrome walking up to the clubhouse. But, there wasn’t anything to worry about - the two members I played with, George & Sue, couldn’t have been more welcoming.
The course itself is deceiving. At first glance, it looks open, gettable from the tee, and forgiving. That lasted all of about 3 shots on the first hole when I quickly turned a 15 foot birdie putt into a 3 foot knee-knocker for bogey… and we’re off to the races.
The majority of the front 9 hugs Pleasant Bay and views of Wequassett resort across the way. When the wind starts howling, you’re in for some very difficult tee shots like the par 3, 4th hole that is almost a guaranteed bogey if you miss the green.
The conditions were spectacular, the pristine attention to detail that you expect, on top of the state of the art facilities that still present an old-school feel. Unfortunately, we had to scurry after the round, otherwise I’d be the first one to sit on their back deck to enjoy a post-round drink while continuing to take in that view.
“The Ho” is so tough to compare to the greats like Myopia and TCC, because it is such a different golf course but undoubtedly lives up to the hype. If I hit Powerball, there is a good chance I’d be submitting an application for membership. Eastward Ho is as good as it gets.
