Overview:
Often regarded as one of the toughest courses on the Cape, Dennis Pines is undoubtably a challenge but a must play public track on Cape Cod.
"The Pines" runs just short of 7,000 yards from the Gold Tees with a slope of 133. Even though I'm usually playing with my old man and uncles who prefer the blue and white tees, I still haven't played a full round from the Golds after 10+ rounds here. Honestly, it is intimidating from all the way back, but would open up some tee shots that from further up bring trouble into play.
Conditions:
The course is typically in great condition but can take a beating when the rain is heavy, especially in the low areas on holes 10 & 11. Speaking of the back 9, this course has the funkiest start to the back side I've seen. Three demanding tee shots back to back to back that require precision with driver, iron, and hybrid/wood. Right when you make a birdie off 9, do NOT get comfortable and strap in for a few brutal ones in a row.
Value:
Being a muni, the costs are definitely more attractive than other public golf on the Cape. Tiered pricing depending on day/time will run you $49 (every day 2-4pm) to $76 (every day before 11am) during the peak season to walk. Tack on another $25 to ride per person. It's $100 and worth the cost, no doubt. The course can definitely open up in the late afternoons so be on the look out for those cheaper times in the summer with late sunsets.
Atmosphere:
Huge fan of the vibes at The Pines. They clubhouse hosts a restaurant that I will visit even if I'm not playing golf, just for their turkey club and a Sam Summer on a hungover Saturday. Sit on their deck overlooking the 11th green to play "Pine Kings" (our version of Draft Kings) with your crew to bet a couple bucks who 3-putts in the groups below. Sonny at the bar will take care of you, be sure to take care of him.
